Butler & Co is based at The Old Stables, Sutton Manor Farm, Bishop's Sutton, near Alresford in Hampshire — a working environment that reflects who we are and the clients we know best. We have been advising individuals, businesses, farmers, landowners and estates from this corner of Hampshire for decades, and the firm has grown steadily by doing the work well rather than by chasing scale.

The firm carries a dual inheritance. Julie Butler built a national reputation in agricultural and equine taxation, speaking at seminars for solicitors and accountants across the country and publishing technical articles that practitioners still cite today. That specialism — covering income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax, SDLT and VAT as they apply to rural and equine businesses — remains central to what we do. Alongside it sits a broad general practice: accounts and bookkeeping, corporation tax, personal tax returns, payroll, Xero migration, probate and estate accounts, and company formations.

What has not changed across those generations is the way we work with clients. Every account has a named contact. Queries get answered — including the ones that feel small. When something is complicated we say so clearly, set out the options, and let you decide. When something is urgent we move quickly.

Our work in probate and estates has become a significant part of the practice. Angela Evans, Fred Butler and the wider team regularly guide executors and beneficiaries through the full range of taxes that arise on death — income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax — as well as the preparation of estate accounts. Clients tell us that being able to come to one firm for both the accounting and the tax advice, rather than piecing it together from several sources, makes a difficult process considerably easier.

We are members of ICAEW and ACCA, hold the Chartered Tax Adviser designation through CIOT, and are Xero-certified advisers. Our office in Bishop's Sutton is easy to reach from Alresford, Alton, Winchester and the wider Hampshire area, and we are comfortable advising clients at a distance where the work suits it.
